The history of Benin

Benin has many legendary areas. The best known probably is Abomey, the former capital of the kingdom of Dahomey. Known and feared for their bravery but also their cruelty was the Amazon army, which had been set up by the Dahomey kings. They were elite soldiers who protected their king. Once every year they set out to catch slaves for trading.

That brings us to Ouidah, another wellknown city of Benin. Ouidah was the center of the slave trade. Back then, the shackled slaves had to walk the three kilometers from the market square (place Cha Cha), around the „tree of forgetting“ and down to the sea where they were herded onto ships. The monument "Porte de Non Retour" (Gate of No Return) is reminiscent of this chapter of history.
